Automatic Marking System FAQs

  1. How many injuries does the AMS find?

When the AMS is used after buffing, it finds nail holes that were missed by previous inspection procedures in approximately 2% of tires being processed.

  1. Where does the AMS go in my production?

Our machines in the field are currently placed after buffing. This allows for the best probe reading and efficiency for your operation. Some shops have removed NDT inspection at initial inspection and rely fully on the AMS after buffing.

  1. How does the AMS affect labor?

Operators are expected to load the tire, start the inspection cycle, and walk away while the AMS performs the inspection. The operator then returns to unload the tire. Because the AMS is retrofitted to existing NDT technology, the machine will still need to be loaded and unloaded by an operator. With the AMS, you are no longer depending on an attentive and focused operator to identify and mark defects in the tire.

  1. Can the AMS retrofit my existing NDT?

The AMS was specifically designed to retrofit most modern NDT systems. We have a set of serial numbers for existing NDT-II and NDT-IIB machines that can be retrofitted. Your machine must be sent to Shamrock for the AMS retrofit kit to be installed.

  1. Does my NDT need to be refurbished for the AMS to be retrofitted?

There are several non-negotiable components that must be replaced for the AMS to operate properly. Our technicians will inspect your machine and provide a quote for any refurbishment needed to meet the minimum requirements for the AMS retrofit.

  1. What if I don't have an NDT to retrofit?

Shamrock can provide a quote for a new NDT that can be equipped with the AMS.

  1. What is the turnaround time for getting an AMS for my shop?

The current turnaround time is approximately 5 weeks.

  1. What is the cost of the AMS?

The current cost for an AMS kit is $56,250. This includes one PDL, a handheld Precise Defect Locator that helps your repair team identify exactly where an injury is located. Additional costs apply for refurbishing an existing NDT or purchasing a new NDT unit.

  1. What is the payback period and ROI?

For a shop averaging 1.5% missed nail holes, the AMS can provide a payback period within the first year based on the current AMS kit cost of $56,250.

  1. What support comes with AMS?

AMS includes installation, operator training, warranty coverage, remote technical support, and one PDL for your repair team.
